Current Research Projects :: Muslim American Public Opinion
The 2007-08 Muslim American Public Opinion Survey (MAPOS)
Principal Investigator: Matt A. Barreto. Co-Principal Investigator: Karam Dana.
Most political science research on racial and ethnic minorities in the United tends to focus on
African Americans, Asian Americans and Latinos. Further, most studies of Muslims typically look at
democratization and political participation in the Middle East. Relatively few efforts have been made to understand
the patterns of social, civic, and political participation among Arab/Muslim Americans in the United States, despite
great increases in their population, citizenship, and voter registration over recent elections. This research project
focuses on two important concepts in racial/ethnic politics among Muslim Americans: the notion of linked fate or
shared group consciousness, and also the importance of tadayyun (or religiosity) and the resulting impact on
political participation. This project has been a collaborative effort, with the survey being fielded in more than
ten cities across America.
Survey Details
We implemented a unique public opinion survey of Muslim Americans in Seattle, Dearborn, MI, San Diego,
Riverside, CA, Raleigh-Durham, NC, Washington D.C., Houston, Dallas Los Angeles, and Chicago in an effort to better understand
the political implications of religious and ethnic shared community in the U.S. and also provide comparative data
for Muslim Americans on many traditional measures of political behavior and participation that are currently lacking.
All surveys were administered in-person by respondents, and were self-administered in an "exit-poll style." Respondents
were randomly selected, as they left Eid prayers or religious services, and were solicited to participate by Muslim American
research assistants (usually recruited by campus MSA). The survey questionnaire was two-pages front/back and available in
English, Arabic, and Farsi.
